What Personal Data We Collect and Why We Collect It

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comment form, as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public as part of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Website visitors can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact Forms

When you contact us through our website forms (such as course inquiries, volunteer applications, or general contact forms), we collect the information you provide including your name, email address, phone number (if provided), and your message. This information is used solely to respond to your inquiry and provide you with the information or services you’ve requested.

We may retain this information to maintain a record of our correspondence and to improve our services. If you subscribe to our newsletter or course updates, we will use your email address to send you relevant information about our activities, courses, and community events. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link provided in our emails.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site, you may choose to save your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is deleted when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you have just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor had visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

We may use web analytics tools (such as Google Analytics) to understand how visitors interact with our website. This helps us improve our content and user experience. These tools collect information such as:

  • Pages visited and time spent on each page
  • How you arrived at our website (referral source)
  • Your general geographic location (city/region level)
  • Device and browser information
  • Anonymous demographic information

This data is collected in an anonymized format and cannot be used to personally identify you. You can opt out of analytics tracking by enabling “Do Not Track” in your browser settings or by using browser extensions that block analytics scripts.

Who We Share Your Data With

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information to third parties without your consent, except as described below:

  • Service Providers: We may share information with trusted third-party service providers who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or serving our users (such as email newsletter services, payment processors for course fees, or website hosting providers). These parties are contractually obligated to keep your information confidential.
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose your information when required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.
  • Safety and Security: We may share information when we believe it’s necessary to protect our rights, property, or safety, or that of our users or the public.

We never share your personal information for marketing purposes with unaffiliated third parties.

How Long We Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users who register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except that they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit this information.

What Rights You Have Over Your Data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where We Send Your Data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Your data may be transferred to and stored on servers located outside your country of residence. We ensure that any international transfers comply with applicable data protection laws and that appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your information.

Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children’s Privacy

Our services are not directed to individuals under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 16, we will take steps to delete such information.
